Elliott + Erika: Saga NYC Engagement

Portraits

When Elliott emailed me about his plans to propose to Erika at Saga NYC, I knew it would be stunning but wow. Elliott planned to propose on the terrace, followed by a five course meal, and a surprise engagement party after with all of their favorite people. I photographed Elliott proposing and then we snuck down to the streets for some portraits of the two of them. After portraits, I said goodbye and pretended I wouldn’t be seeing them again for the party just a few hours later. I loved seeing the look on Erika’s face when she entered the top deck and saw everyone she loved there to celebrate them.

Saga NYC is an incredible spot for a proposal, with its beautiful city views and atmosphere that’s hard to beat. As a photographer, I recommend coordinating with the restaurant in advance to secure the best angles and discreetly capture the moment.

Timing is key—sunset or nighttime proposals make for stunning backdrops. The intimate terrace offers a bit more privacy, while the main dining room provides a dramatic setting. A formal dress code adds to the elegance, so every shot looks polished.

If you’re planning to propose here, consider hiring a photographer to document the moment seamlessly. The combination of skyline views and fine dining makes for unforgettable images.

Erika shared a little bit about the proposal. You can read her words, here:

How surprised were you when Elliott proposed?

Honestly, I was suspicious. I truly think I’m one of the most observant people – not much gets past me. Plus, Elliott had been showing me something on a phone when an alert “Erika’s surprise engagement party” came up. He was really upset I saw it – but I assured him that I had no idea when it would happen, who would be involved, etc. I was a little bit skeptical when he had booked a hotel room for after the dinner for “his birthday” – it’s not something we’ve done before! However, I was going back and forth on whether it was actually happening then.

What was your favorite part of the night?

My favorite part had to have been walking into Overstory and seeing everyone who had shown up to celebrate us. I was so shocked to see my sister, my friend Russell who had been living in London and moved his flight to make the surprise, and my best friend Daisy who had been due to give birth two days prior! I have videos of my reaction when I saw everyone – let’s just say that I cried hysterically. I was so touched that Elliott went through all of the trouble to get all of these people together.

Where did you get the dress you were wearing?

Actually, Elliott got it for me! It’s from a favorite designer of mine, Zimmermann. He knows I love the brand and snuck into my closet to see what size I am. Before I met him at dinner (he was coming separately), he told me to go into his closet and to open the garment bag he had hanging there. The dress is so special to me!

What were some special details about your ring?

I’m so in love with my ring. It’s a crisscut, which is so unique and beautiful. Elliott apparently had five renditions of the ring and wanted it “just right”, and I think he nailed it. There are pink tourmalines (his birthstone) in the hidden halo – a subtle detail you really have to look to see. It’s also engraved with “Love of my life” on the inside of the ring.
